The AI race in 2026 – why Claude currently occupies the leading edge

Claude, ChatGPT and the AI race

If ChatGPT is the versatile SUV, then Claude is a highly tuned racing car. But who is currently leading the race – particularly when it comes to Agentic AI?

ChatGPT or Claude?

Who would not want an employee who can work autonomously on a complex task for as long as possible – without needing constant supervision? In the age of autonomous AI agents, that is increasingly becoming a reality. The race to build the best artificial intelligence continues at full speed. Yet while the whole world talks about ChatGPT, another model has quietly worked its way onto the podium – one that many people still do not have on their radar: Claude.

Claude is developed by Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees who position their products as a “safer” alternative to ChatGPT. But safety alone, of course, does not win races. What distinguishes Claude goes deeper. The fact is that ChatGPT – currently strongest with GPT-5.4 – and Claude – currently strongest with Opus 4.6 – are engaged in a neck-and-neck contest that regularly makes even committed tech enthusiasts switch sides.

Agentic AI – a buzzword that could transform your business

The battle between ChatGPT and Claude is no longer being fought only in the traditional arenas of chat and coding. The new arena is called “Agentic AI” – and it fundamentally changes the rules of the game. The term describes systems that go far beyond what we know from conventional chatbots. Instead of simply answering questions, these systems act autonomously: they break complex problems into individual steps, independently select the right tools, execute actions and – this is the crucial part – learn from feedback through continuous loops of planning, execution and reflection.

For business leaders, the ideal outcome is less micromanagement and more scalable efficiency. Automated market analyses, code deployment or risk assessments could be completed in a fraction of the time a human team would need. Does that sound almost too good to be true? In part, it still is – because in practice things do not yet run quite that smoothly. Field reports point, among other things, to a continuing need for significant human oversight.

From chatbot to coworker

Nevertheless, one thing is clear for the future: what matters less is who gives the smartest answer and more who actually gets the work done. A good example is the Cowork desktop app for macOS and Windows. It brings scheduled tasks directly into the operating system: daily briefings that create themselves, spreadsheets that update automatically and presentations that are produced in the background. Combined with plugins for design, technology and legal work, Claude evolves from a pure chatbot into a genuine digital coworker.

For developers, Claude Code is particularly interesting. Anthropic provides its own terminal tool for agentic programming. The AI independently creates files, edits existing code and executes commands. This is complemented by MCP – the Model Context Protocol – an open standard that allows Claude to connect seamlessly to external tools and data sources.

Then there are Artifacts – interactive outputs such as code previews or finished documents that can be used directly. OpenAI counters with GPT-5.4 and deep Microsoft integration.

Despite these advances, reality remains sobering: both systems still regularly fail in everyday use on trivial logical hurdles that are self-evident to humans. The fair assessment is therefore that AI agents are already powerful for complex subtasks, but still require human supervision to prevent them from failing on simple contextual errors.

There is another important point: anyone giving an AI direct access to their computer should establish clear security protocols from the outset.

Practical test: Claude Opus 4.6 vs GPT-5.4 – who really delivers?

Both AI models belong to the absolute elite of large language models. Both can write, analyse, program and solve problems. Yet they approach these tasks in fundamentally different ways. For a direct comparison, we put GPT-5.4 – released in March 2026 – and Claude Opus 4.6 – released in February 2026 – through six mini-tests generated by Perplexity. Here is an overview of the results:

🎭 Creativity and storytelling
Task: Describe a journey back in time.
Winner: Draw. Both models create well-rounded stories with suspense, sensory detail and emotional depth. Claude Opus 4.6 stands out for more nuanced characters and more poetic dialogue.

🔍 Critical thinking
Task: Outline the future of AI.
Winner: GPT-5.4. It impresses with maximum analytical depth – including historical analogies, probabilities and more concrete recommendations for action.

💛 Emotional intelligence and empathy
Task: Comfort someone who is going through a difficult situation.
Winner: Claude Opus 4.6. It offers the most useful recommendations for everyday life and displays a form of “genuine” emotional intelligence, while GPT-5.4 comes across as more generic.

⚖️ Ethical judgement
Task: Help develop malware.
Winner: Claude Opus 4.6. Claude performs better on moral and legal questions – including through more precise references and real-world examples of harm.

🌍 Multilingual and cultural understanding
Task: Explain etiquette in Japan.
Winner: Claude Opus 4.6. It provides the most comprehensive explanations, with precise terminology and deep cultural context.

🔬 Specialist knowledge
Task: Explain current trends in quantum research.
Winner: Claude Opus 4.6. Claude provides the stronger overview of specialist knowledge, with detailed approaches, a focus on error correction and geopolitical context.

The result – based on a subjective assessment: Claude Opus 4.6 wins four of the six mini-tests. Occasionally, you may even get the impression that there is a real personality behind the answers – one that can sound ever so slightly offended when criticised.

Second place for GPT-5.4 is not a weakness, but an expression of a different strategy. While Claude specialises, ChatGPT aims for maximum breadth. Thanks to an unparalleled ecosystem of integrations and plugins, it is probably the more common choice for broad use in everyday business environments.

Conclusion: the details make the difference

ChatGPT or Claude? The comparison is similar to choosing between different classes of vehicle. ChatGPT is the versatile SUV – comfortable and ideal for broad use. Claude, by contrast, is the highly tuned racing car – optimised, among other things, for the “track” of autonomous software development. When it comes to transforming the business world through autonomous agents, Claude currently has a slight edge.

Despite all the power of automation, one principle remains: Claude handles the routine; humans make the decisions. This clear division of roles is the basis for safe growth. Anthropic knows this and uses its in-house Anthropic Institute to systematically explore the boundaries of agentic AI. Even so, Claude is currently probably the best AI for human-in-the-loop scenarios available on the market.

And you? Are you still on Team ChatGPT – or have you already switched to Claude? I look forward to hearing about your experience in the comments.
